Southern Kung Fu learning Curve?

Is it true that people generally learn and effectively utilize southern kung fu faster than Northern Kung fu? Since Southern China has the epicenter of Anti-Ching Dynasty sentiment, people needed to be proficient in hand-to-hand combat quickly to use against the Manchurian northerners, wouldn't Southern Kung fu need to be simpler? Also, Northern Kung fu has more long range kicks, which take lots of stretching and time consuming to get the flexibility to do high and spinning kicks, while Southern Kung fu is more reliant on short range punching which doesn't need alot of stretching, so is that one of the reasons why Southern Kung fu is more punch-oriented, as well as being shorter than the Northern manchurians, and packed into crowded cities where kicks aren't as practical as in the North.
